Mai Atafo Played With Unconventionality

Renowned for his sharp bespoke suiting and dreamy bridal couture, Mai Atafo brought just that, and even more to the runway at the 2017 Abryanz and Style and Fashion Awards. Titled ‘The Heart’, his collection had been officially unveiled at Heineken London Fashion and Design Week 2017 with a private viewing. But that didn’t mean it wasn’t deserving of a spectacular presentation even here in Kampala.

Featuring gowns with demure draping and silhouettes, but with mind blowing cascading detail, the collection brought unconventionality to bridal wear. Pink, blue, nude and more were some of the colours he used on the collection, something that’s totally unconventional. Models swayed down the gigantic runway making everyone’s dreams come true.

Before I get lost in the bridal couture spectacle this was, the collection also featured a slew of dapper menswear looks. As with all his menswear, every piece seemed like it had been cut to fit. Models strutted in evening wear jackets with jacquard print, velvet and more luxurious detailing.

According to the brand, the Heart collection was inspired by the bride who follows her heart when picking her dress, without the constraints of the church and a budget or the influences of friends and family. It’s not surprising that it was so hard to not fall in love with the collection.

In true Mai Atafo fashion, he closed the presentation with a dramatic dance reminiscent of a scene from the movie ‘Beauty and the beast’. The collection was proof that following your heart can have infinite perks. Every piece catered to the needs of the modern bride who is ready to follow her heart and desires, not tradition!
